TCB

I bought a kiln, a slip mixer and two pouring tables. The first thing is to set up the kiln, so I just had an electrician over, and he'll install a breaker and a 240v/50amp plug for me this weekend. The next thing is to test the elements and replace any that are bad.

Theory - raising mainstream tastes - Current State of Movies

I'm not sure that mainstream audiences are dumb.

They do, however, appear to be dumb to the movie industry.

The problem is that studios have to get the audience's attention in order to sell a movie. The ideas are dumb and loud because that's what gets attention, that's how you get someone to turn their head, by being dumb and loud. Not because that is what the audience really wants to experience (although in some cases admittedly this is true.)

The audience wants to see something good. However, they see the (entire night out) experience as more than just the movie. To them, it's an outing, a social event, similar to poker night or a PTA meeting or even church to other types (non movie-mainstream) of audiences. It's ritualistic and therefore the quality automatically goes out the door since it has less bearing on the general experience of the event.

Anyway, I'm rambling but the final point is that it might be possible to market a smart and good movie in a dumb and loud fashion in order to get the attention of mainstream audiences, have a huge opening weekend, and then introduce nearly everyone to a really good movie.

The Car Plant is Closing

I work a stone's throw away from the NUMMI car plant, and from what I gather, it's closing in August. They make those little Toyota pickups and the Pontiac Vibe. Both are pretty good vehicles; and now thousands of well paid people will be out of work. I'll miss the banging of rail cars at night, and wonder what will become of that huge manufacturing complex.

LiveJournal Shmucks And Ignorant LiveJournal Sheep

Here's a LJ post insisting that victims of a recent mob attack are racist liars. Two people ended up hospitalized, the FBI is now investigating, and none of the news accounts dispute the facts. The police have interviewed eyewitnesses and the only question is whether this was a hate crime.

One thing that bothers me is the hundreds of ignorant replies ripping apart the family that was attacked, insulting them every way imaginable. Baa Baa, is this how you earn your progressive stripes?

Three Things

We're busy at work, getting out the second big order this month. It has to be ready for pickup Monday afternoon, and everything is coming together well.

I've been day trading the last few months, trying to make a little extra money while business was slow. I don't need to now, with this second order, but I still have a short position in the S&P 500 that needs watching. Day trading is like a second job for me, and it involves getting up really early.

I almost have all the parts for my Suzuki, but I don't think I'll have any time for that before Tuesday.
